A Brief History

On May 28, 2024 the Rollerball League announced that eight teams would take part in their inaugural season beginning in January 2025. A Denver based team, the Colorado Stegos, are one of the founding franchises.

This league has no connection to the 1975 motion picture "Rollerball" starring James Caan or the 2002 reimagined "Rollerball" starring Chris Klein.

Rollerball is fast-paced, with continuous action and frequent transitions between offense and defense. Players use their hands to catch, throw, and shoot the ball, while wearing roller skates.

Rollerball will be similar to hockey and soccer, and there is a 50/50 gender ratio rule to ensures equal representation of both genders on the field at all times. This means that for each team, there must be at least two male and two female players on the field during play.

Games will begin with a throw-off, where the ball is thrown into play from the center circle. The home team decides whether to throw off in the first half or receive in the second half.

Each game consists of two halves, lasting 25 minutes each, with a running clock. The final five minutes of each half are stop-clock time, except after a score, when there's a seven-second stoppage to sub out players.

Goals are scored when the ball completely crosses the goal line into the opponent's net. Each goal counts as one point.

Teams can make unlimited substitutions, typically during stoppages in play. Substitutions must occur within the designated substitution area near the team bench.

Players are not allowed to dribble the ball. Instead, they must pass or shoot it to advance it up the field.

Power plays occur when one team has a numerical advantage over the other due to a penalty. The penalized team plays with one player fewer for a set amount of time, typically two minutes.

Each team will be allowed a limited number of timeouts per game, which they can use to strategize, rest players, or make substitutions.
