A Brief History

After the collapse of the Trans-American Football League, the two bigger teams - the San Antonio Toros and the Dallas Rockets - formed a new league in 1972 called the Southwest Professional Football League. Games were played in the fall and the league's commissioner was Pro Football Hall of Famer Ollie Matson. After the first season the SWPFL approached the Canadian Football League to become an "American branch league of the CFL". The league sent a representative to the CFL league meeting, and the CFL was "receptive to the idea", but the SWPFL did not survive long enough to see it come to fruition. The Denver Oilers joined the league in 1973, but that would prove to be the final season of the SWPFL.
