A Brief History
On July 31, 2024 the proposed Women's Elite Rugby announces their first three cities; Boston, Chicago, and Denver. No team names were announced. Three more cities are expected to join before play begins in the Spring of 2025.
Women's Elite Rugby was announced in April 2024, and will be the first ever American professional women’s rugby league. The mission of the WER is to be the defining standard of rugby in the United States.
On January 29, 2025 the WER announced team names for all six inaugural clubs. The Colorado team will be called the Denver Onyx.
Denver has a rich history of mining for rare gems and metals, and the team takes its name from the Colorado rose onyx, a gem featured in the foundation of the Colorado state capitol building and known for its colors that reflect a Colorado sunset.
The black onyx, also mined in the state, represents strength, courage and determination symbolising the sheer grit and resilience of these athletes. The logo features gemstones in these contrasting black and bright pink colors.
